The Herstory of My Sister’s Closet

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Can it really be 32 years ago that our humble little store was born? In 1991, we bravely (or naively) entered the world of resale opening My Sister’s Closet in the heart of Phoenix.

Who knew a 1,200 square feet store would change shopping in the Valley of the Sun? More than three decades later, we would be operating 10 of the best consignment stores in the country. People love buying previously loved clothing and home goods!

Shopping “resale” literally went from a somewhat unseemly proposition in the early 1990’s to bragging rights in the new millennium. In 1991 when we recognized a customer outside of the store, they would look the other way, not wanting to be recognized. Now our shoppers proudly show off their recycled purchases to their most discerning friends, be it patio furniture or the latest designer handbag. In either case, they saved hundreds, or sometimes thousands of dollars while giving used items a new home and keeping them out of landfills.

In 2001, we opened Well Suited for men, and My Sister’s Attic now has four locations for furniture and home furnishings. In 2012 we opened our first store outside of Arizona in San Diego. We now have two of our stores (in one location) in the San Diego area.

In 2014, we opened a small thrift store that donates millions of dollars to nonprofits in our community to help others. My Sisters’ Charities is our own 501(c)3 foundation that also hosted A Dinner with Wolves for years to benefit groups that help save the Mexican Grey Wolf (the second most endangered wolf species in the world). We also gave a $1 million donation to the AZ Humane Society to help build their new shelter.

As a family business goes, sometimes the family moves on. After working as the director of Marketing at Petsmart Ann started the business with her own money in 1991. She’s proud to say she has never borrowed one penny to finance the business. Her sister Jenny joined along back in the beginning but decided to leave in 2019. Sister Tess joined in 2016 but a series of miscreant behaviors have led her out the door. This leaves Ann as the only sister once again and she is quick to tell you she has no desire to retire. It might be a little lonely at the top but if you have any siblings you also know it’s a little quieter too.

With a seasoned, talented management team, the My Sister’s family of stores will continue to expand with brick and mortar stores as well as shopping online. Thanks to our consigners and customers, we sell the best of the best at amazing prices for second hand shopping.

Why We Dumped Single Use Plastics

Posted by My Sister's Closet

My Sister’s Closet's entire business is built on sustainability, so it’s no surprise that we’re strict on our ban on single use plastics. Single use plastics cause a huge detriment to the environment and to the health of people. It is important to be knowledgeable about these dangers to make better decisions for the well being of the planet and for our families. That’s why Ann Siner, CEO of our company, banned single use plastics all the way back in 2014 for a multitude of reasons that include the health and safety of our employees and customers, as well as the wellness of our planet over all.

Out of the 50 billion plastic water bottles used just last year, only about a fourth were recycled. That means that the rest of this waste went to dumps and littered the environment. Plastic never goes away, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually turning into something called microplastics. In aquatic environments, plankton will eat these microplastics and these toxic materials will work all the way up the food chain to be ingested by people. By the year 2050 there will be more plastic by weight than there will be fish, which is a terrifying prospect.

Plastics that make their way into the human body are dangerous to our normal everyday functions. As mentioned before, because of microplastics found in the food chain, studies have shown that human beings are suffering the consequences of their actions through hormonal imbalances, reproductive problems, and even cancer. Single use plastics have a huge effect on climate change as well. Single use plastics are made using fossil fuels, and it is estimated that 12.5 to 1.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas from these fuels is being admitted to our atmosphere. Furthermore the removal of forested land to make space for these plastic factories has created more carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere with no trees to turn it back into oxygen. 1.6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide have already been released.

This is why we’ve banned plastics from our stores. The dangers of using single use plastics far outweigh the ‘convenience’ of them. Our employees use reusable water bottles, and we offer paper bags for 25 cents instead of the plastic alternative, because we care about the environment and the people that live in it. Take a stand against single use plastic today, and we can guarantee that ocean denizens, our atmosphere, and even more affected by plastic will thank you!

How to Wear White After Labor Day

Posted by My Sister's Closet

White after labor day isn’t the taboo that it once was. There’s more than a few ways to look sleek and stylish rocking cream, off-white, and ivory these days, and we’ve got more than a few style ideas for you to feast your eyes on.

1. White Out - With use of different textures, White on white can make a person of any color look classically stylish and elegant. Don’t be skittish about adding a pop of color, like turquoise, to your all white ensemble either.

2. Neutral Zone - Pair your white centerpiece with warm neutrals for a fall look that is chic and cozy. Animal prints can add a bit of flavor to your neutral outfit as well without becoming overpowering.

Pictured: Sweater - Valentino, Jacket - Michael Kors, Pants - Balenciaga, Shoes - Christian Louboutin

3. Black is Always the New Black - Black and white go hand in hand in fashion. Pair a summery white dress with a black leather jacket to extend your favorite dress into fall. Or go for European stripes for a more Parisian experience.

Pictured: Dress - Shoshana, Jacket - Max Mara, Bag - YSL

4. We’re Blushing! - For a softer look, pair blush tones with white. Petal pale pink blazers paired with white trousers are a sure way to show the more feminine side of yourself.

Pictured: Top - Haute Hippy, Skirt - Proenza Schouler, Jacket & Bag - Burberry, Bike - Huffy (Sold at My Sister's Attic)

5. Passion for Plaid - That academia look never quite goes out of style. Pair plaid with white for a cozy, fall look, whether that be with a plaid skirt, pants, or a simple plaid scarf.

We hope these looks have sparked ideas about what to shop for this labor day weekend. Keep us in mind when you’re scouting out that perfect white outfit for your next big event.

Celebrating Earth Day Everyday

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Each day, our home faces peril. The Earth is undergoing negative changes caused by our overuse of its resources, the waste we throw into its waters and land, and the mistreatment and downright exploitation of its creatures to the point (or sometimes past the point) of their extinction. We as individuals have to change our ways before it’s too late and we don’t have a home to take care of anymore.  That’s why My Sister’s Closet’s Staff believes that Earth Day should be every day.

Did you know that globally the world produces 270 million tons of plastic per year? Of that plastic, 275 million tons of it is wasted. That’s correct, because in previous years, 5 million tons of plastic waste existed outside of plastic production per year. Why is this so bad?  Plastic cups are being found inside whales, and recent discoveries have shown that plastic toxins can drastically change the metabolism and growth of sea creatures. Not to mention that humans are breathing in the toxins given off by plastic production every day.

The fashion industry is just as bad as the plastic industry. Clothing waste is one of the biggest contributors to pollution on our Earth. 85% of textiles end up at the dump every year, and some clothes contain plastics that when washed and end up in our oceans. Fast fashion, which is when large corporations make catwalk fashion for cheap, contributes to this waste. The women and children exploited to make this fashion in countries outside America are often underpaid and overworked , leading to questions of human rights as well.

So what can you do to fight back? Learn who you’re buying with. In the words of our CEO Ann Siner herself, “We’ve been [recycling fashion] for 31 years while others are hopping on the bandwagon. We recycle men’s and women’s clothing, as well as home furnishings and furniture. AND what our stores don’t sell goes to My Sisters’ Charities thrift store where they are given another chance at recycled life.”

By taking in well-made fashion and selling it at a cheaper price, we encourage our customers to give our merchandise a second life, instead of sending perfectly good items to the dump. This combats fast fashion because we’re still taking the higher quality items - we’re just putting them into a price range that’s a bit more accessible to more buyers.

Furthermore, My Sister’s Closet banned plastics in 2017 in their stores. Employees drink from reusable water bottles and every store has a water filter system to refill their containers.  Customers are offered paper bags instead of plastic bags. Oftentimes, our sales people will say that our customers will forgo the bag and just carry their stuff out, saving even more on waste! We use compostable plastic trash bags in our stores and office. We have eliminated plastic from our company!

For the last 31 years, everyday has been Earth Day for My Sister’s Closet. We want to be role models for our customers and other businesses to show how it should be done. Ann Siner and team have taken care of our Earth and its creatures from day one since opening the doors to these stores, and there’s no plan to stop climbing the path to a better future for our planet anytime soon.

Hot Spring Trends in 2022

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Spring has sprung sooner than most of us have expected it to; birds are singing, bees are buzzing, and spring fashion has already hit the runway and stores near you. This can leave the average person wondering what trends are hot like the season, and which are going to leave you out in the cold. Not to worry, we’ll set you on the straight and narrow on which ones to follow for spring 2022.

  1. The Bigger The Better- Select pieces that will make your frame seem bigger and bulkier than it is. Fluffy jackets, dresses with over accentuated hips, and oversized pants and shirts rule this trend.

  2. Power Colors- It’s no surprise that bright, rich colors are taking over in the springtime. Feed your need to stand out in bright fuschias, oranges, reds, and pinks.

  3. Beach Ready- If you’re a beach bum, this one’s for you. Mix your swimwear with your other clothing to create an outfit that shows you’re ready to hit the waves.

  4. It’s a ‘Sheer’ Thing- It’s time to show some skin! But not really. Sheer fabrics are a perfect way to create an ethereal look that can show off the body while still keeping that hint of mystery.

  5. Me-wow!- Credit Kim Kardashian for this look, because catsuits are in this spring. Don’t be afraid to show off those curves in these skin tight pieces; the tighter the better!

  6. All About The Bra- This will be a lazy girl favorite; take your favorite lacy bra, bandeau, or bralette and just rock it. No top needed. It’s the perfect mix of sexy and minimal effort.

  7. Tails and Trains- A long train isn’t just for the bride anymore. Choose dresses or tops that have simple or exquisite trains and tails to add a little flair to your outfit.

  8. Work that Shoe- Take your work shoes out of the office and onto the streets this spring! From boots, to platforms, to loafers, get them out from under your desk and into the open.

  9. Puss In Boots- Shatter expectations with knee to thigh high boots this season! They’re a classic, and a must for every closet, even in warmer weather.

  10. Mmm Watcha Say- Brand names, logos, and sayings on your clothing items are a huge hit for spring. Show off your love for your favorite brands, and get the word out about your opinions right on your clothes.

  11. Honey I Shrunk the Fashion- Micro pieces are totally in right now. Purses the size of a piece of candy. Tops and shorts that cover the bare minimum. Make that big statement with a tiny treasure.

  12. Going on a Stripe Hunt!- Really embody your inner zebra, because you heard right, stripes are back in! Any color stripe is welcome of course, but that classic black and white can’t be beat.

  13. About Face- It’s important to round out the look with the right makeup. This year the focus is on natural skin, very flushed cheeks. So go ham on the blush and easy on the concealer and foundation!

  14. Pantone’s Very Peri- We of course can’t forget 2022’s color of the year, very peri. This is a bluish purplish shade that’s flattering on a range of skin tones, so keep this color in your arsenal.

So now you know what’s what, it’s time to shop your closet to see what you have in your collection already. Of course stop by My Sister’s Closet to find the spring trends you’re dying for at affordable prices to make up for what you’re missing. Hope to see you there!

How To Economize Your Gas Usage

Posted by My Sister's Closet

In America, where public transportation is lacking in comparison to other countries, we rely heavily on cars to take us where we need to go,so gas is essential. However, gas prices are on the rise, so much so that the U.S is looking at an average of $4.25 per gallon come May according to USA Today. With every cent counting these days, citizens can’t afford to be wasting gas willy nilly. But what is the best way to save on the stuff? Stick around and we’ll give you the 8 best ways to economize that gas usage!

  1. Avoid using your car in the first place- The best way to save something is to not use it. See if you can make your commute virtual by working at home. Or if you’re close enough, try bike riding or walking to your destinations. You’ll get the workout and your car will get a nice break.

  2. Split the Cost- Here’s another way to give your gas usage a break. Carpool with neighbors or coworkers to destinations. By taking turns daily, weekly, or splitting the cost of gas between you a gallon can go a long way.

  3. Strategize Your Route- Sometimes the shortest or fastest route isn’t the most fuel efficient. Use the map function on your cell phone or computer to map out which route has the fewest stop signs, street lights, and over all traffic congestion to minimize acceleration and deceleration.

  4. Slow and Steady Wins the Race- Sometimes as people we get impatient and just want to floor it when that light goes green, or slam the breaks when we hit a red. However, being gentle and slow is the way to go. Ease your way into acceleration and go slowly into your stop. Always obey speed limits as well, because every 5 mph faster you go up to the point of 50 mph, you’re wasting more gas.

  5. Don’t Idle Away Your Gas- Generally if you’re parked in place for more than 60 seconds, it’s best to turn off your engine instead of wasting gas.

  6. Don’t Weigh Yourself Down- Avoid putting cargo on top of your car, as it’ll add weight and affect your car’s aerodynamics. If you must add cargo, put it in the back so the weight won’t affect the aerodynamics. On the note of weight, make sure you aren’t keeping things you don’t use in your car, because the more weight your car carries the more gas it uses up.

  7. Running Errands?- Minimize the number of trips you take out with your car. Try to get all your errands done in one day. When you get to your destination, park farther away so that you’re not wasting your time and gas looking for a parking space close to the front.

  8. TLC- A well taken care of car is a gas saving car. Make sure that your engine is in tip top shape with the correct fuel grade, and that your tires are filled to the correct PSI. PSI information can usually be found in the door frame of your driver’s seat.

This just goes to show that with a tiny bit of adjustment, the individual can make a difference in their gas intake, and in turn make a difference on their impact on the earth. These are just some of the ways you can economize your lifestyle to save yourself some money, and the planet.

Sustainability

Posted by My Sister's Closet

With the world thrown into the chaos of climate change and human consumption, conservation should be on the forefront of everyone’s mind. Yet sustainability appears to be an unattainable goal held above our heads with large corporations taking little care in sustainable living. This is when the power, your power, as the individual comes into play. It’s our job as individuals to come together to educate ourselves and support organizations that covet sustainability as one of their most important facets.

My Sister’s Closet takes the issue of sustainability very seriously. In fact, the business is based around the idea of giving high end clothing, accessories, and footwear a “second life”. Shopping at My Sister’s Closet and Well Suited combats the acts of fast fashion, which is when businesses take successful catwalk fashion and mass produce it at a cheap cost. Why is fast fashion so bad? It leaves a huge environmental footprint, and the workers who are making fast fashion are sometimes women and children doing so in abhorrent conditions for little pay.

That’s why buying a more durable item you’ll wear for a long time at a bargain price is considered more sustainable. However, this isn’t the only way that My Sister’s Closet has lessened their ecological footprint. Ann Siner, Owner and CEO of My Sister’s Closet, has gotten rid of plastic use throughout the company. This includes the banning of plastic bags at check out counters. Instead, recyclable paper bags can be bought for twenty five cents.

As an individual, you vote with your dollar what businesses stay and what goes. That’s the kind of power that you have. Sustainability isn’t going to just happen on its own, there has to be the kind of people there to nurture its success. You start the nurturing with a decision as simple as shopping at My Sister’s Closet.

How to Consign

Posted by My Sister's Closet

A home is a temple, and sometimes temples can become cluttered. The Manolo’s you thought were the bees knees that didn’t quite suit you after all, the Armani sports coat that you just don’t seem to wear anymore, or the old dining room set in the garage, are all collecting dust is your sacred space. The best solution is to clear out the old and make room for the new, but what to do with the old items?

If they follow the three C’s: clean, cute and current, then consigning is the best way to get value on your previous purchases. Bring your items to any My Sister’s Closet, Well Suited, or My Sister’s Attic location ( you can mail them in if you’re out of state!), or if your furniture is too big for you to move, we’ll come to you and take it off your hands. Then leave the rest up to us!

As soon as your items are sold, you get paid. That’s the bottom line. No fuss, no muss. It’s that easy. So bring us your items today.

Fall Fashion Trends 2021

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Photos by: Tanielle Gilbert

As summer’s heat fades to fall’s cool breezes it has become the time to indulge in things that can only be enjoyed when the season turns. Watching as the Autumn leaves turn crisp, splurging on expensive pumpkin themed drinks, and of course, seeing what’s new in the fall fashion line up. Last year we were all bundled up inside, unable to really explore creative fashion trends, but this year is a different story. So grab your favorite blanket and a cup of cocoa; we’re going through some of the top fall trends of 2021 that are sure to bring that autumnal feel to your wardrobe.

When one thinks of fall, color is not what usually comes to mind. Pastels and neons usually reign supreme in the summer. However, saturated colors are in. Brilliant jewel tones such as magentas and rich mustard yellows paired with bright pops of pink and blue are considered appropriate fall wear this year.

It’s time for skinny jeans to scoot over! Even though they’ll always have a place in our hearts, looser fitting denim is the trend taking over autumn of 2021. Mom jeans, straight cut jeans, and other looser fits are making a comeback. This trend is especially cute when paired with a tighter fitting top to balance out the bagginess of the denim.

Knits are a fall essential, so of course they would be mentioned in this list. In particular, the sweater vest stands out this year from the rest. Whether on its own, or paired with a button up underneath, the sweater vest makes a statement that you’ll definitely want in your closet repertoire.

This next one is going to be easy for those who don’t live in snowy weather. Showing a bit of skin can be as fashionable as wearing clothing itself, which is why this fall trend is asking that we show a little midriff this season. Of course, show what you’re comfortable with, whether that’s just a little seam of skin seen while in motion, or full on midriff.

No need to pray for your ankles this year ladies! Retro platforms are in, so you can get that extra height that you want without having to don the dreaded stiletto. So feel free to swing with the seventies and walk a mile in this trend.

Last and certainly not least, there’s a little sparkle and shine. Sequins and sparkly pieces of clothing are making an impact this fall season. Adding a sequined skirt or shirt to your outfit can really give you that glow up that you’ve been searching for.

So whether you want to play bold with color, and stay safe with knits, there’s something for everyone on this list. Fall is the time of year for comfort, so being comfortable while playing around with your fashion is fun and encouraged. That being said, I challenge you to try something you might not have before; you might find yourself enjoying something you never thought you would have.

What Happened to the Chico's Racks at My Sister's Closet?

Posted by My Sister's Closet

2020 wasn’t all bad. The crazy year made us take a look at our business, our customers and what’s in our stores. Our hurried lives of 2019 became a casual weekend every day.

So we took a hard look at our inventory. We made changes to the labels and the styles that we sell. Customers are not looking for fancy clothing or even structured office attire. Customers want comfort and simplicity. And they still want to look fashionable.

So we created a category we call Wear It Better (or WIB). You’ll find comfortable and well-made clothing from the likes of Eileen Fisher, Lafayette, J. McLaughlin, Escada, Neon Buddha, Misook and other labels designed for the savvy mature and fashion forward shopper.

Eileen Fisher uses natural fabrics with designs that you can mix and match. The pieces are structured yet have the freedom to move and be comfortable. The “look” is casual yet can be worn anywhere. From cashmere to linen to organic cotton, EF uses fabrics that are better for women and for the environment.

Clothing by Lafayette epitomizes ease and comfort. Isn’t that what we are all looking for? The manufacturers in our WIB category are catering to refinement and style while keeping comfort at top of mind.

Escada and J. McLaughlin mix an enticing mix of color with fun with their clothing. These are the favorite labels you’ve longed for but your wallet said NO. Now you and your wallet can say yes to these brands at My Sister’s Closet.

So check out our WIB and Eileen Fisher racks at My Sister’s Closet five locations throughout Arizona and Southern California. These items typically retail for well over $300, with some prices over $1,000. Our prices start at $24.95. And the sizes range from XXS to XXL. In a nutshell, there’s something for everyone. Just try on a few pieces and we guarantee you’ll be coming back for more.

Tips for Cleaning Out Your Household

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Happy New Year! We finally made it to 2021, so what better time for a fresh start. Although we can’t predict what this upcoming year has in store for all of us, something that is in our control is giving our wardrobes and living spaces a little refresher. And who better to help than our teams at My Sister’s Closet, Well Suited, and My Sister’s Attic. We are your one-stop-shop for selling or trading items you no longer wear or use and replacing them with fresh, high-quality styles at a fraction of the retail price.

Going through your home and closet to let go of pieces you no longer wear can feel liberating, and simplifying your wardrobe allows you to make room for fewer, higher-end pieces. The timeline can be different for everyone, but if you haven’t worn the item in over a year, let it go!

This is where consigning comes into play, and it’s so easy.

Here’s how it works:

  • Go through your closet and stick to the 3 C’s - Cute, Clean, Current
  • Bring us your items. Anything you consign with us should be ready to hit the racks.
  • Get paid! Whether you’d just like cash for your items or you’ve spotted something great in the store, as soon as your item sells, the money or store credit is yours!

Some things to keep in mind when bringing your items to My Sister’s Closet - make sure all clothing items are clean, wrinkle-free, and on hangers. We accept stylist items that are no more than 4-5 years old unless it's a great vintage piece. The better the condition of the items, the more money or store credit you’ll receive for them. When bringing in furniture or household items to My Sister’s Attic, make sure they are clean and ready to be sold. Items should be no more than 8-10 years old, with the exception of vintage or mid-century items. Email photos of your items to [email protected].

Let’s turn the page and make 2021 the best year yet!

Why Do We Give?

Posted by My Sister's Closet

From the first month in 1991 when my sisters and I started My Sister’s Closet, we donated our unsold inventory to the thrift stores of local animal shelters. Since then we have given millions of dollars in product and cash to save the lives of those who can't speak for themselves.  The return has been immeasurable.  Rarely a day goes by where a customer in one of our stores doesn't go out of their way to share that they shop with us because of our commitment to help suffering and homeless animals.

In 2013, we set a company record, donating 32% of our net profits from My Sister’s Closet to those in need. In 2014, we created our own 501c3 organization called My Sisters’ Charities and thrift store in AZ. This small store not only recycles the items that don’t sell in our regular stores, but the profits have been donated to many groups totaling well over $1.4million in just a few short years. From Fresh Start Women’s Foundation to SW Autism Center to Defenders of Wildlife, we chose to help wildlife, women and homeless pets.

In 2018 and 2019, my sister Tess and I chaired “Compassion with Fashion” a fundraiser to benefit the AZ Humane Society. We set a new record in 2018 by raising $1.1million and then chaired the event again in 2019 and raised a record $1.3million for homeless pets in the Phoenix area.

I have personally served on the boards for the AZ Humane Society, The Phoenix Art Museum, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, and several other nonprofits. Not only do we give in kind and cash donations, we give our time and creativity.

Now Helen Woodward Humane Society and Last Chance at Life in the San Diego area join our list of beneficiaries for donations. We literally give truckloads of thrift items every week to their thrift stores. These in kind donations have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2019 for homeless pets in CA.

We also give truckloads of unsold product to the AZ Humane Society thrift stores every week resulting in record sales once again to benefit dogs and cats.

The sisters behind My Sister’s Closet and My Sister’s Attic are proud to help the communities we serve. We thank our customers for their donations and hope to do even more in 2021 to help the four-legged animals we so dearly love.

My Sisters Closet: The Standard in Profitability, Sustainability, Charity, and Style

Posted by My Sister's Closet

What was happening in 1991?

- The first commercial website was launched
- Neiman Marcus opened in Scottsdale
- The US liberated Kuwait from Iraq

What wasn’t happening was the practice of sustainability. Nobody even knew what it was. So, not surprisingly, discerning consumers didn’t want to wear other people’s used clothing – luxury or not. Nevertheless, we had this crazy idea that buying and selling high-end used items could be good business if we created an experience that equaled traditional retail. That meant designing a store that looked, felt and smelled like a trendy boutique, not like some dingy thrift shop. Impeccable customer service was non-negotiable. With our plan in place, we opened the first My Sister’s Closet store in 1991 in Central Phoenix. This would prove to be the first of many crazy ideas over the ensuing decades.

After 28 years, our stores continue to show vibrant year-over-year growth. In the retail world, that’s rare. While we’ve had great success adding home furnishings, men’s apparel and expanding our brands into Southern California, we’ve also learned some lessons along the way. For example, selling and consigning wedding dresses and kid’s items weren’t such hot ideas in hindsight. Eleanor Roosevelt once famously said, “every day do something that scares you” and owning a retail business more than helps us meet her challenge.

Whereas people once were embarrassed or ashamed to wear used clothes, nowadays they brag about the smoking deal they got on designer jeans or shoes. Sustainability and recycling have become retail buzzwords and societal trends. Today the resale bandwagon is jam-packed with wannabe stores, some of which are even backed by venture capitalists. However, My Sister’s Closet continues to be the gold standard for the industry.

One of the areas where we have always forged a new path is our dedication to community involvement. For 20+ years we donated unsold merchandise to the thrift stores of our favorite non-profits. We came to realize those stores weren’t producing as much revenue as they could have been for their organizations. Which shouldn’t be such a surprise since running a retail store is pretty different than administering a successful nonprofit. On the other hand, we do know a thing or two about retail, and that gave us an idea. It was time to raise the bar and raise it we did.

In 2014, thanks to the flexibility of our landlord, we opened our own 501(c)3 thrift store in Chandler. This would be the first brick and mortar initiative of our nonprofit arm, My Sisters’ Charities. Over $100,000 was generated in less than six months and in 2018 the store netted $300,000. This helped propel us to making a $1 million donation to the Arizona Humane Society. My Sisters’ Charities also proudly supports Fresh Start, Defenders of Wildlife, Phoenix Art Museum, SW Autism Center and Rancho Coastal Humane Society (San Diego), to name a few.

As community leaders, the sisters also serve as board members for some of Phoenix’s most respected organizations. Ann currently sits on the Board of Directors for both the Arizona Humane Society and the Phoenix Art Museum, after previously serving on the boards of Fresh Start, The Nature Conservancy and SW Wildlife Conservation Center. Tess was recently named a Trendsetter in 2019 for her charitable work for the Arizona Humane Society, Fresh Start, SW Wildlife Center and the Phoenix Art Museum.

Another major initiative in our commitment to sustainability has been eliminating single-use plastic items likes bags, cups and straws in all of our stores. This initiative began internally years ago and in 2019 we launched an external awareness campaign targeting local and national consumer businesses. Slowly but surely, people are learning about the devastation plastic has unleashed on our environment and wildlife, and we are proud to say they are starting to do something about it thanks in part to our advocacy.

What’s next? Well, we plan to make the 20’s roar! Initiatives are being rolled out that will yield even higher quality inventory, improve customer service and enhance the look and feel of the stores. We’re as committed to our brick and mortar locations as we were back in 1991. We remain passionate about being community leaders, specifically supporting homeless pets, the environment, wildlife, and women’s organizations. We might have graduated from the school of hard knocks when we started out, but as our mom taught us, “until you fail you don’t succeed.”

The Real Housewife of Scottsdale Mandy Holmes Shops MSC For The Holidays

Posted by My Sister's Closet

Fall is my very favorite time to get dressed, as it allows for everything I love: texture, prints, pops of color, and layers. This season I've teamed up with my favorite consignment boutique in town, My Sister's Closet to share a few of my favorite holiday finds.

Starting with this whimsical dress from Diesel ($34.95) - it is truly a showstopper! The material moves with every step you take and with the cut and neckline details, doesn't require many accessories. I love the mint green hue and forgiving shape (since we all know I LOVE holiday cookies) and the leather snap neck embellishment adds a bit of an edge. Think nice list meets naughty list. I paired this dress with a crystal bracelet ($39.95) in the fine jewelry section of My Sisters Closet.

Adding a pop of color is always a good idea, especially red during the holidays. I adore these wide leg red pants by Leifsdottir ($24.95) with a patterned top like this Joie brand houndstooth ($34.95) blouse. These pants still had the original tag attached and retailed for over $125! A bargain and style? Can't beat that! With the help of Maggie at My Sisters Closet, we paired a just-the-right-size cross body Marc Jacobs metallic blue bag ($89.95) to complete the look.

With the AZ temperatures dipping into the 50's at night, I was on a mission for a stylish but functional jacket and the fact that velvet is HOT this season, the gals at My Sisters Closet and I thought this was the perfect combo. The faux fur coat from Betsy Johnson ($29.95) and cocoa colored velvet dress from Rachel Roy ($24.95) combine to create the coziest look that with a shoe and jewelry change is versatile enough for the office or that after work holiday get together. In this case, the necklace adds just the right pop of sparkle.

Speaking of mixing textures, I will thrilled to find this sparkly little number from Dress the Population (on sale for $19) and combine it with a leather biker jacket ($55) to create a little rockstar vibe. If you're looking for a New Years option, this could be it. Rock and roll meets glam if you ask me.

One of my favorite parts of shopping at My Sister's Closet is when you find an expected piece that feels like it was designed just for you and the cost is less than your morning Starbucks. That's exactly what happened when I picked up this Michael Kors fur lined sweater poncho ($12.50). Not only did it fit like a glove, the price was incredible. Full disclosure, I purchased this sweater right away but they have others very similar you can get your hands on! It looks adorable with a pair of comfy boyfriend jeans like these by Vince ($49.95)

The key to dressing for an Arizona winter is layering. Not only is this grey sweater dress from James Perse ($24.95) SO comfortable, it's the perfect piece to pile on a print jacket or vest like this one by Angel of the North ($14.95) and a cute bag like this versatile black and white satchel from Marc Jacobs ($245.00)

If this next outfit doesn't scream "holidays" I don't know what does. The sangria hued cozy wool blend coat ($395.00) puts the "burrrrr" in Burberry and is the perfect outerwear option for days the temps dip below 70. I paired it over a Haute Hippie forest green dress ($35.00) for an unexpected play on traditional Christmas colors. The green accent ring ($14.95) is all this outfit needs!

Mixing patterns and prints is something I love to do but I get it, it can be totally scary! My rule for mixing is go with what feels comfortable, it doesn't have to match but it will definitely make sense. I try to stick with 2 patterns and a few textures if I'm feeling extra wild. Speaking of wild, these cheetah print pants ($24.00) and the textured Tory Burch ruffle ivory top ($39.95) are the ideal match for a cropped jacket such as this one with gold thread details from Amanda Uprichard ($24.00).

I hope you have a fun and fashionable holiday season- Be sure to make it a December to remember by stopping my the My Sister's Closet location nearest to you!

Dear Ann,

There's no way that we can express in a letter how much My Sister's Closet and Well Suited have done to help support Rancho Coastal Humane Society's programs for people and animals.

Over the past six years, clothing donations to us from My Sister's Closet and Well Suited exceed $1.5 million and provided more than $600,000 in revenue to the shelter through our thrift shop.

Thanks to My Sister's Closet and Well Suited, the animals in Rancho Coastal Humane Society's pet adoption program receive the best care possible. Children are learning lessons in humanity. Senior citizens and their pets stay together because of the food they receive from the RCHS Pet Food Bank. Pet Assisted Therapy dogs visit extended care facilities and struggling students with the gift of "fur therapy." Victims of domestic violence are able to escape with their lives thanks to the safety net of the RCHS Animal Safehouse Program.

All of this thanks to the generosity of My Sister's Closet and Well Suited.
